Etsy's search algorithm gets small updates every month. But a handful of principles have stayed essentially unchanged for years. Here they are.
1. Front-load the title
Your full title is not visible in search results — depending on the device and screen width, shoppers only read the first few words. Put your most important keyword there. “Personalized Ceramic Mug — Handmade Gift” works harder than “Handmade Ceramic Mug | Personalized Gift”, both for search and for the human scanning the results grid.
2. Use all 13 tags
Etsy gives you 13 tags per listing. Every slot you leave empty is search visibility you chose not to have — each tag is one more query your listing can turn up in.
💡 Tip: To avoid duplication, don't copy words straight out of the title into your tags — try new, related phrases instead.
3. Favour long-tail keywords
Instead of one-word tags like “jewelry”, use longer phrases such as “handmade boho jewelry gift for her”. They face less competition and they reach shoppers who are much closer to buying.
4. Keep title, tags and attributes consistent
Etsy treats a phrase that appears in several parts of a listing (title + tag + attributes) as a stronger relevance signal than one that appears once. Use your 5-6 most important keywords consistently across those fields.
5. Raise your photo quality
Etsy tracks how often a listing gets clicked, favourited and bought from search results, and folds that into a listing quality score. Your cover photo is the first thing feeding that score.
6. Price against your actual competitors
Price too low and you damage the perception of quality; price too high and conversion drops. Map the price band of the top 20 listings in your category, then choose your position deliberately — above the average or below it, but not by accident.
7. Keep stock and processing times realistic
Stock levels and processing times you can't honour turn into cancellations and late shipments. Cancellations, late dispatch and the reviews that follow weaken the customer and market experience side of your shop — and with it your ranking.
8. Publish new listings regularly
Etsy states that newly published listings receive a temporary visibility boost. Adding one or two listings a week lets you benefit from that and gives you a constant test bed for which title patterns actually work.
9. Keep your shop rating as close to 5 as you can
Star ratings are a critical part of how Etsy assesses “customer and market experience”. A short, polite thank-you message after delivery that reminds buyers a review helps is the fastest — and least intrusive — way to lift it.
10. Set a free shipping threshold
Etsy runs a programme that gives extra search prominence to listings offering free shipping to US buyers. If you can't absorb it on every order, offering free shipping above a set basket value supports both average order value and visibility.
💡 Tip: Applying all ten by hand takes time. Boostolog's Listing Optimizer reads every title, tag and description and returns an SEO score out of 100 in seconds.
