An Etsy title can run to 140 characters, but search results never show all of them — the title is truncated depending on the device. Serving both realities at once, visibility and clickability, is what makes a title good.

The anatomy of an Etsy title

A strong Etsy title has three parts:

  • Primary keyword (right at the front) — critical for both search and for the eye scanning results
  • Product attributes — material, colour, size, intended use
  • Long-tail phrases — narrower reach, but a much more intentional audience

Bad vs. good title examples

For a ceramic mug

❌ Bad: “Ceramic Mug Handmade Blue Coffee Cup Mug Tea” ✅ Good: “Personalized Ceramic Coffee Mug | Handmade Blue Stoneware | Minimalist Gift for Her”

For jewellery

❌ Bad: “Gold Necklace Jewelry Handmade Chain Women Gift” ✅ Good: “Dainty Gold Birth Stone Necklace | Personalized Initial Charm | Minimalist Jewelry Gift”

Five common title mistakes

  • Writing the whole title in capitals (reads as spam)
  • Repeating variations of the same keyword (keyword stuffing)
  • Leading with abstract adjectives instead of attributes (“Beautiful”, “Amazing”)
  • Mixing several languages in one title
  • Running phrases together with no comma or pipe (|) to separate them

A formula for spending 140 characters well

[Primary keyword] | [Product type] | [Material/Colour] | [Use case] | [Recipient]

Example: “Personalized Leather Journal | Handmade Sketchbook | Vintage Brown | Gift for Writers | A5 Travel Notebook”
