The 13 tags on an Etsy listing are the most direct control you have over search. Yet most sellers either leave slots empty or fill them with near-duplicates of each other.
How Etsy's tag system works
Each tag can be up to 20 characters long, and Etsy tries to match those tags against the shopper's search phrase. An exact match is the strongest signal, but partial matches count too — which is exactly why multi-word tags outperform single words.
How to split the 13 tags
- 3-4 tags: product type and material (“ceramic mug”, “stoneware cup”, “handmade pottery”)
- 3-4 tags: audience and use (“gift for her”, “coffee lover gift”, “housewarming gift”)
- 2-3 tags: style and aesthetic (“minimalist”, “boho”, “rustic farmhouse”)
- 2-3 tags: occasions and seasons (“christmas gift”, “birthday gift”, “mothers day gift”)
Tag mistakes to avoid
- Copying phrases verbatim from your title (it wins you no new queries)
- Using broad single words (“jewelry”, “gift”, “art”)
- Jumping on trending keywords unrelated to the product
- Writing tags in capitals
- Leaving phrases over 20 characters to be cut off
Analysing competitor tags
Competitor tags aren't shown in Etsy's interface, but they are present in the page source. Rather than doing that listing by listing, Boostolog's Competitor Analysis module extracts the tags that appear most often across a shop you choose.
💡 Tip: Review your tags every three months. Adding seasonal tags (christmas, summer, valentines) on time — and removing them once the season ends — keeps the listing's relevance high.
